Good day.

I recently moved to Switzerland for a job and I would like to know whether or not I can open a 3a retirement account and how I would go about claiming the tax deduction for contributions I make. My employer deducts a witholding tax from my salary, so I won't file my own tax return as far as I know.

Thank you for your help.

Hi there,

Anybody living in Switzerland and working for a Swiss employer can open a 3a retirement savings account.

If you are a foreign resident and your taxes are deducted from your salary (withholding tax or tax at source), you can still claim deductions for 3a contributions. Tax deduction declaration forms are available at your local tax office. You can list all deductions for which you are eligible on this form.

You will be reimbursed for the difference between the withholding tax deducted from your salary and the actual tax you have to pay after deductions.

Best regards from Moneyguru
