My husband is employed part-time (30%) and pays for social security based on his salary. His salary is high enough that the payments he makes are more than double the minimum required payment.

Curiously, the social security office billed us for my minimum payment separately. What is the story here? Do I have to pay my own social security even though my husband’s contributions already cover both of our minimum payments?

The reason you were billed separately although your husband technically covers your contributions as well is this: In Switzerland, a person must be employed at least 50% in order to cover social security payments for their spouse. Additionally, the employed person must work at least 9 months out of each calendar year to be eligible.

Because, in your case, your husband works only 30%, he is not eligible to cover your minimum annual contribution although his contributions would otherwise be high enough to cover for you.
