I heard that you can get better deals on insurance directly from Swiss brokers than those you can find online on the websites of insurance companies. Do you think that could be possible or is it misinformation? What is the best way to buy insurance?

Greetings,

The general rule here is: The cost of an insurance policy does not change regardless of how the policy is obtained. But there are exceptions to this rule.

Firstly, some insurance providers offer certain low-cost policies online only, and not through brokers or agencies. The reason for this is that selling insurance directly online cuts the cost of employing administrative personnel.

On the other hand there are also insurance policies and supplements which are only sold through brokers or agencies, and are not available online.

Identical policies which are offered both online and offline normally have exactly the same premiums no matter how you apply.

But there are insurance brokers and agencies which do offer their customers tidy discounts on standard prices. In this case, getting insurance through a broker can work out cheaper than applying online.

If you purchase insurance through brokers or agents, however, you should be aware that some of them may try to maximize their commissions by getting your to sign long-term contracts (5 years, for example) or sell you additional insurance which you do not actually need.

Verdict: Whether you apply for insurance through an insurance broker or online, you should make sure to compare policies carefully in order to find the best deal and avoid paying for unnecessary coverage.

Best regards from Moneyguru

Right now Simpego offers travel insurance, device insurance, car insurance and instrument insurance (as you probably gathered from their website).

But Simpego is not an insurance company. It just brokers insurance from Baloise, ERV, Dextra, Coop Rechtsschutz and Vaudoise.

In its adverts Simpego positions itself as an alternative to comparison websites which picks out the best value for money for you.

The instrument insurance is innovative: You can insure individual instruments. Apparently, it includes loss and damage protection.

The device insurance lets you insure drones, tablets, smartphones, etc. individually. I'm not sure if paying a 25-franc annual premium to insure a 300-franc device is worth it.

A nice feature is that you can request quotes or apply directly.
