Does Swiss health insurance cover treatments for obesity?
Hi there,
Compulsory Swiss health insurance covers nutritional counseling for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more - but only if the obesity leads to health problems. A doctor's referal is required in order to claim benefits for nutritional counseling. Up to 12 counseling sessions are covered (2 x 6 sessions). The insurance company will normally require a report from their own medical assessor before covering the cost of nuritional counseling. Certain weight-loss medicines are also covered.
Some supplemental health insurance policies extend the coverage for obesity treatment to cover rehabilitation and alternative medicine.
