Greetings,

How your retirement savings are divided when you die depends on whether or not you are married. If you are not married, your asset are inherited by your legal heirs as per Swiss succession laws.

If you are married and you pass away before your spouse, your retirement savings are divided equally between you and your spouse because legally speaking, the death of one partner equates a divorce. Your half of the retirement savings are then divided between your heirs - including your spouse.

Assets may be distributed differently if you create a marital agreement or a will before you pass away.

The moneyland.ch guide to Swiss succession rules provides an overview of how your money is distributed both with and without your leaving a will.

Best regards from Moneyguru
