My health insurance provider sent me what looked like an update to my contract for signing. On closer inspection I realized that they were asking me to sign a document which would free doctors and specialists who treat me from their obligation to professional discretion so that they can share information about my health and treatments with the insurance company.

Is it normal for health insurance companies to request this? Should I sign? What are the benefits?

Hi there,

Health insurance providers may try to get you to sign a statement waiving your right to the protection of your medical records. The reason they want to access your records is to find out whether or not you pose a long-term risk.

You are under absolutely no obligation to waive your right to privacy and doing so is not recommended. Insurance companies only have the right to obtain information which is directly relevant to a specific claim. Only in that case should you agree to a transfer of information from your doctor to your health insurance.

Best regards from Moneyguru
