Can I bring gold and other precious metals into Switzerland? How should I go about declaring these at customs?

In Switzerland, gold in the form of bullion or coins is exempt from VAT. Other precious metals including silver, palladium and platinum, must be taxed at 8% VAT. Gold jewelry or items aside from bullion and coins are also taxed at this rate.

Bonded warehouses provide an alternative which can, in some cases, be beneficial for precious metal investors. Customs duties and VAT are not levied on precious metals placed directly into these interim storage areas. You can read more about bonded warehouses in the guide to bonded warehouses in Switzerland.

When you import gold bullion into Switzerland, customs officials may require the bullion to be tested for purity and authenticity.
