How is it possible that the exact same groceries can be so much more expensive in Switzerland than right across the border? You would think that the strong demand for the Swiss franc would mean food could be imported at rock bottom prices. Is this just retailers taking advantage of convenience shoppers or are there logical reasons for the high prices?

Hi there,

There are multiple theories on why many items cost more in Switzerland than they do in neighboring countries.

Swiss VAT rates are much lower than those of most European countries. Rents for commercial real estate, on the other hand, are relatively high. It is also worth noting that Switzerland has a high population density, so demand is high. Disposable income levels are also high, and this also contributes to demand. However, there are thousands of factors which influence pricing.

But it is worth noting that there are simple ways to reduce your grocery spending. You can get tips on how to save on groceries in the moneyland.ch guide to grocery savings in Switzerland.

Best regards from Moneyguru
