Swiss Market Index SMI

The Swiss Market Index (SMI) is the primary index of the SIX Swiss Exchange. The index tracks the performance of 20 of the highest market capitalization stocks listed on the exchange.

Because the combined market capitalization of the 20 companies tracked by the SMI makes up approximately 75 percent of the total market capitalization of the SIX Swiss exchange, it is an important indicator of the state of Switzerland’s overall economy.

The SMI is a weighted index, with the maximum weight for any one stock being limited to 18 percent.

Many sub-indexes based on the SMI are also published. These include the dividend-adjusted SMI (SMIC) and the Volatility Index on the SMI (VSMI), among others.
