Sunrise, the second-biggest Swiss mobile service provider, is launching five new mobile plans. The four new Sunrise Connect mobile plans replace the existing Sunrise Up offers. Additionally, Sunrise is also launching a new Travel East mobile plan that includes features geared to travel in Balkan countries. The new mobile plans from Sunrise are available from April 7, 2025.
Overview of the new Swiss Connect mobile plans from Sunrise
The basic monthly fees for the new Sunrise mobile plans range between 34.90 and 99.90 Swiss francs, at standard prices. All of these plans include unlimited phone calls within Switzerland.
The main feature shared by all of these plans is that they all include mobile roaming allowances – though those included in the cheapest plan are very limited. Sunrise says that the significance of mobile roaming services is increasing as travel returns to pre-corona levels.
The table below gives you an overview of the new mobile plans:
How are the new Sunrise plans different from the existing ones?
The new mobile plans from Sunrise include more allowances than the previous ones, but also cost between 4.50 and 6.90 francs more per month. Across a year, that price difference translates into between 54 and 82.80 francs more.
Sunrise launches a Balkan plan
Alongside its new Sunrise Connect plans, Sunrise is also launching a Sunrise Travel East mobile plan. This new offer has a price tag of 89.90 francs per month.
The plan’s basic monthly flat fee covers unlimited local calls and mobile data within Switzerland. But the included mobile roaming allowances (10 gigabytes of roaming data and 60 minutes of roaming calls) apply both to neighboring countries (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein) and to six Balkan countries and territories (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia. The plan also includes 60 minutes of international calls from Switzerland to these countries in its flat fee.
Sunrise is betting on special promotions for all customers
Sunrise says that loyalty and multiple plans pay off, with the same benefits generally applying to both new and existing customers. Customers who combine more than one mobile or landline plan enjoy discounts of up to 50 percent.
Sunrise will place a stronger focus on discounts – for both new and existing customers. A strong emphasis is placed on discounts of 50 percent, though discounts generally cannot be used in conjunction with each other. The rules are somewhat confusing though. For example, the home telecom discount can be combined with the discount for using more than one mobile plan. In that case, the first discount applies to the first mobile plan, and the second discount applies to additional mobile plans.
Many of these discounts only apply when you get more than one product from Sunrise. Most of the discounts have already been offered up until now.
Customers who no longer pay the promotional price can receive these discounts:
- Home benefit: 50-percent discount off the basic flat fee of your first mobile plan when you also subscribe to a Sunrise home Internet plan (with or without TV). You also get a 10 percent discount off the flat fee for the home Internet plan. This discount is available for all Swiss Connect plans and the Travel East plan.
- Multi-home benefit: 50 percent discount off the basic flat fee for up to four additional mobile plans. This is a family discount, but Sunrise also accepts groups of friends and acquaintances. This discount is available for all Swiss Connect plans and the Travel East plan.
- Flex Premium Bundle: 50 percent discount off the basic flat fee of your mobile plan when you get a Swiss Connect plan as part of the Flex Premium package. This discount is available for all Swiss Connect plans and the Travel East plan.
Once the minimum contract term of your mobile plan has expired, your automatically benefit from a 20-franc “loyalty” discount. However, that only applies if you do not receive any other Sunrise discounts. The loyalty discount does not apply to the Swiss Connect Lite plan.
The new Swiss Connect plans are also available as youth plans
Sunrise is the only Swiss mobile service provider that still offers special youth plans. Swisscom and Salt phased out their youth plans some time ago.
The three Swiss Connect plans – Neighbors, Europe+, and Global – are also available in youth versions. Like before, youth plans are available to customers up to the age of 27. In terms of the included allowances, the youth plans are identical to the standard plans. As an additional benefit, young customers have the option of purchasing a Half-Fare Travelcard from the SBB/CFF with a 50-percent discount. Sunrise is offering these youth plans with a 50-percent discount off the basic flat fee. The discount cannot be combined with other discounts.
How prices compare with other mobile plans
Compared to offers from other mobile service providers, the new Sunrise mobile plans are relatively expensive. This is shown by a moneyland.ch analysis of pricing across three different user profiles:
- User profile 1: This person consumes 6 gigabytes of local mobile data in Switzerland every month, and needs unlimited phone calls for a flat fee.
- User profile 2: This person needs unlimited local data, SMS messages, and phone calls within Switzerland for a flat fee.
- User profile 3: This person needs unlimited local calls, SMS messaging, and data within Switzerland for a flat fee. Additionally, they also need 30 gigabytes of roaming data for EU countries, but do not consume more than 12 gigabytes of roaming data within the same month.
Because Sunrise applies a 50-percent discount, the comparison also accounts for discounts offered by other telecom service providers. The resulting offers are marked with footnotes.
Conclusion by moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler
The new mobile plans from Sunrise are more expensive than the former plans, but also include more allowances. Existing Sunrise customers should ask themselves whether moving to one of the new plans and paying the higher price is justifiable. One positive thing is that existing customers do not automatically have to move to the new plan if they do not want to.
I also find it interesting that the monthly fees of the three most expensive Swiss Connect plans are identical to those of Sunrise’s main competitor Swisscom. The moneyland.ch price comparison clearly shows that the new Sunrise mobile plans are expensive. Even when the 50-percent discount is accounted for, the Swiss Connect plans from Sunrise still cost around twice as much as the cheapest offers from competitors.
Offering a mobile plan with international call and roaming allowances specifically for the Balkans is definitely a good idea. Around 280,000 of Switzerland’s residents hold a passport from one of the included Balkan countries, and many holders of Swiss passports have their roots in these countries. But the plan from Sunrise is comparatively expensive. Because the costs for service providers are relatively high, there are hardly any Swiss service providers with similar offers.
Saving tip: If you want to stay in touch with friends and relatively in Balkan countries by phone, using messaging apps like Whatsapp is the cheapest way to do it. When visiting these countries, using a travel eSIM is normally a good choice. Depending on the amount of data you need and the length of time during which you will use it, you can pay less than one franc per gigabyte of roaming data.
