I will be moving to Switzerland soon and I am trying to get an idea of what my budget will look like. One question I have is whether or not car insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. It is not mandatory in the country I live in right now.

Hi there,

Car liability insurance is compulsory in Switzerland. This insurance covers the costs of injuries and damages inflicted on other people and their property by your car when you are at fault.

Other car insurances, including collision insurance (covers damage to your car when you are at fault), passenger insurance (covers injuries to you and your passengers when you are at fault) and comprehensive insurance (covers damages to your car caused by hazards other than collisions), are not compulsory. You can take out these optional insurances if you choose to.

Best regards from Moneyguru
