Salt: All EU Countries Are Now in the Europe Zone

June 1, 2026 - Ralf Beyeler

Salt is making changes to its roaming offers. Telecom expert Ralf Beyeler from moneyland.ch analyzed the new conditions.

As of June 1, 2026, the terms and conditions for mobile roaming in foreign countries with Salt have changed.

The three most important changes are:

  • Salt’s Europe zone now includes all EU countries.
  • Salt is introducing weekly and monthly bundles.
  • For many non-EU countries, Salt now has country-specific roaming bundles, instead of bundles for whole zones.

All changes apply not just to offers from the main Salt brand, but also to Salt’s subsidiary Gomo, and to co-branded carriers like Lidl Connect, Sky Mobile, and Post Mobile. Roaming bundles and regions are identical across all of these carriers. So the information in this article applies to Salt, Gomo, Lidl Connect, Sky Mobile, and Post Mobile.

The Europe zone now includes all EU countries

Salt’s roaming services have long been criticized for the fact that the Europe zone did not include all EU countries. In terms of data roaming, Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Lithuania, and Slovenia were treated the same way as far-away travel destinations like Thailand, Australia, and Peru.

Now, all EU countries are included in Salt’s Europe zone. These are in addition to non-EU European countries that were already included in that zone, such as the United Kingdom and Norway. “Consumers expect a roaming offer for Europe to include all EU countries,” says moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler. Beyeler sees the change positively. “Salt’s competitors have already included all EU countries in their Europe roaming zones for many years now.”

Salt now only offers large annual bundles

Swiss carriers began offering annual roaming bundles around five years ago, largely because of legal requirements. These bundles include a predefined data allowance that remains valid for one year. During that time, the bundle can be used to get online while traveling, within the limitations of the included allowance.

Salt will now offer just one annual roaming bundle. This bundle includes 20 gigabytes of data and 60 minutes of calls. Up until now, Salt had three different roaming data bundles per zone, each in various sizes.

Just one annual bundle for the Europe zone

The new bundle costs 39.95 francs, and can be used for roaming in all EU countries, the United Kingdom, and Norway.

For customers who use a lot of data, the new offer is much cheaper than the previous offers. “Until now, Salt charged 100 or 150 francs for a 12-gigabyte bundle with a one-year validity period. Now, customers can get a much bigger bundle for 40 francs,” calculates telecom expert Ralf Beyeler. But there are also cases in which the new pricing is more expensive. Customers who need up to 3 gigabytes of data for roaming in most EU countries will now pay more than they did previously.

Good to know: The annual bundle for the Europe zone does not include non-EU European countries and territories in the Balkan region. That means it cannot be used for roaming in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, or Serbia.

Country-specific annual bundles for many countries

Salt now offers country-specific bundles with a one-year validity period for 72 non-EU countries. These bundles can only be used for roaming in one country. For most countries, the price of these country-specific bundles is 59.95 francs.

The prices of the new country-specific bundles are greatly reduced compared to the previous offers. Until now, a one-gigabyte bundle for Serbia, Costa Rica, or Vietnam cost around 150 francs. Now, a 20-gigabyte bundle costs around 60 francs.

Bundles for Tunisia are a particularly stark example. Salt previously charged 400 francs for a 1-gigabyte roaming bundle for Tunisia. Now, an annual bundle with a 20-gigabyte allowance costs less than 100 francs. “Getting that amount of data at the former quoted price would have cost nearly 8000 francs,” observes Ralf Beyeler. That is not a price that holidaymakers would pay to stay online while traveling. The new bundles, on the other hand, will likely appeal to tourists.

Salt introduces weekly and monthly bundles

Salt is now also offering bundles with validity terms of one week and one month. The weekly bundles include five gigabytes of data, while the monthly bundles have 20 gigabytes. You remain online after the limit is reached, but at a heavily throttled bandwidth of 128 kbps.

The weekly bundle for the Europe zone (EU countries, the United Kingdom, and Norway) costs 14.95 francs. Salt also offers country-specific roaming bundles for 149 different countries. The price varies between 14.95 and 79.95 francs, depending on the country.

The monthly bundle for the Europe zone costs 29.95 francs. Country-specific monthly bundles are available for 74 different countries, with price tags of between 29.95 francs and 79.95 francs.

Compared to the previous prices, the new pricing model is cheaper in most cases. The difference is less noticeable for small amounts of data and for travel to multiple countries.

Analysis: Which roaming offer is best for Salt customers?

Salt customers should reconsider how they use Salt’s roaming offers. With the new offers, it helps to consider how long you plan to stay in a certain country. Whether or not you want to make calls in addition to getting online is another consideration.

If most of your travel is to EU countries, then an annual bundle for the Europe zone is often the cheapest roaming solution. For 40 francs, you get 20 gigabytes of data, which is usually enough for customers who do not stream video.

Weekly and monthly bundles are a good choice for travel outside of Europe, as your average holidaymaker does not travel to faraway countries like Costa Rica, South Africa, or Thailand more than once a year.

How does Salt compare with competitors?

Salt is rapidly catching up with the competition. In the past, Salt was one of the most expensive Swiss carriers in terms of mobile roaming in foreign countries. But that just changed, and depending on the data volume and country Salt can now be one of the more affordable carriers.

A comparison with competing offers reveals the following:

  • For small amounts of data in particular, Salt is often more expensive than its competition. But for large amounts of roaming data for certain countries, Salt compares well with Swisscom and Sunrise.
  • A roaming bundle for EU countries with 20 gigabytes of data and a one-year validity term for 40 francs is relatively affordable. Swisscom charges 60 francs for a bundle that size. If you need more than 6 gigabytes of roaming data, then Salt works out cheaper than Sunrise. Mobile carrier M-Tel, on the other hand, is much cheaper than Salt, charging around 25 francs for 20 gigabytes.
  • For travel to non-EU Balkan countries and other countries that are not in Salt’s Europe zone, Salt’s prices are similar to those charged by Swisscom. But for trips exceeding one to three weeks, Swisscom and Sunrise are often cheaper.
  • Differences between countries are large. Salt charges around 30 francs for a 20-gigabyte bundle for India, Japan, New Zealand, or Turkey. Swisscom charges nearly 50 francs for a country-specific bundle, but you get a one-year validity term.
  • For roaming in Brazil, Singapore, or South Africa, on the other hand, Swisscom is much cheaper. Its country-specific bundles with 20 gigabytes of data cost 30 francs less than Salt’s.
  • For roaming in countries outside of Europe, Salt is cheaper than Swisscom, Sunrise, and many other competing carriers.
