Sunrise customers will now have different data roaming bundles for mobile Internet access while traveling abroad.
The most important changes:
- Europe, Turkey, USA, and Canada: Sunrise is changing the sizes and pricing of bundles.
- Balkan countries: Sunrise is launching a new bundle for six Balkan countries.
- South America and Asia: Sunrise is revising its existing data bundles for around 100 other countries, and is introducing a new bundle.
Most of the new and revised bundles are now available with immediate effect. The new Travel Data Unlimited (Zone A) and Travel Data XL Western Balkans bundles will be available from April 21, 2026. Customers who have existing bundles purchased before the change can continue to use their bundles, but the price reductions introduced with the new bundles do not apply in arrears.
Changes to roaming bundles for Europe
Sunrise is revising its data roaming bundles for its Region 1 zone. This zone includes all EU countries, the United Kingdom, Norway, Turkey, the US, and Canada.
There are still three different bundles to choose from, all with one-year expiry periods. Now, a one-gigabyte (1024 megabyte) bundle costs 7.90 francs, a five-gigabyte bundle costs 24.90 francs, and a 10-gigabyte bundle costs 47.90 francs. Up until now, Sunrise offered a 500-megabyte bundle for 7.90 francs, a three-gigabyte bundle for 24.90 francs, and a six-gigabyte bundle for 49.90 francs.
For the comparison between Sunrise’s new and old bundles, and offers from competitors, moneyland.ch calculated the costs for between 1000 and 10,000 megabytes per year. It then determined the unweighted average price per gigabyte (1000 megabytes) based on that data.
- Comparison with the old Sunrise offers: With the revision, the average cost of roaming data bundles from Sunrise is sinking from 10.63 francs to 6.82 francs. That translates into a price reduction of 35.8 percent.
- Comparison with offers from competitors: Notwithstanding the substantial price reductions for Sunrise bundles, there are still cheaper offers for data roaming in all EU countries. Spusu is the cheapest, at 3.91 francs. Coop Mobile, Migros Mobile, and Wingo are also cheaper than Sunrise, at 6.24 francs. Carriers that charge more than Sunrise include Swisscom with 8.41 francs, and Salt with 14.14 francs for most EU countries and 20.95 francs for the remaining EU countries. Swisscom’s country-specific bundles, which can be used in just one country rather than a whole zone, are cheaper than Sunrise, at 5.34 francs per gigabyte.
Sunrise still offers travelers a data roaming bundle for 59.90 francs that is valid for just one month. Because the comparison only accounts for bundles with a one-year validity period, this offer is not included in the comparison. However, there is no scenario in which Sunrise’s one-month bundle would work out cheaper for usage of up to 10,000 megabytes. That is true even when calculated on a monthly basis instead of annually.
Changes for Balkan countries
Travel to Balkan countries is very popular among many of Switzerland’s residents. The problem is that many Balkan countries are not included in the “Europe” zones used by Swiss carriers. The result is that mobile roaming in these countries costs more.
Sunrise is launching a new Travel Data XL Western Balkans roaming data bundle specifically for travel to Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia. This 20-gigabyte bundle costs 49.90 francs, and will be available from April 21, 2026.
“The Balkan bundle is more of a marketing gag than a useful solution for customers,” concludes Ralf Beyeler from moneyland.ch. Customers who use less than 10 gigabytes of data while traveling in the covered Balkan countries will not save money compared to using a bundle for Sunrise’s Zone A, which is also becoming cheaper.
A comparison of average costs for an annual use of between 1000 and 10,000 megabytes confirms that fact:
- Comparison with the old Sunrise offers: The average cost is going down from 12.16 francs to 8.04 francs. That is a price reduction of 33.9 percent.
- Comparison with offers from competitors: Spusu is the cheapest, with average costs between 1.95 francs (Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and Serbia) and 6.84 francs (Kosovo). Carriers that are more expensive than Sunrise in this regards include Swisscom at 13.32 francs, and Salt at 139.37 francs. Swisscom’s country-specific bundles for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia cost 6.88 francs per gigabyte, on average.
Changes to bundles for all other countries
Sunrise is also revising roaming data bundles for its Zone A roaming region. This zone includes many countries in Central America, South America, and Asia. It also covers some Balkan countries, Australia, New Zealand, and certain countries in Africa. According to Sunrise, the bundle can be used for mobile Internet in around 100 different countries.
An important change is the revision of Sunrise’s data roaming bundles, which are valid for one year. A one-gigabyte bundle now costs 9.90 francs, a five-gigabyte bundle costs 29.90 francs, and a 10-gigabyte bundle costs 49.90 francs. Up until now, Sunrise offered a 500-megabyte bundle for 14.90 francs, a four-gigabyte bundle for 39.90 francs, and a 10-gigabyte bundle for 59.90 francs.
A comparison based on the calculated cost of annual usages between 1000 and 10,000 megabytes reveals the following:
- Comparison with the old Sunrise offers: The average cost has gone down from 12.16 francs to 8.04 francs. So the Sunrise’s new bundles cost 33.9 percent less than its old bundles, on average.
- Comparison with offers from competitors: Sunrise’s pricing for countries in its Zone A region compare favorably with offers from competitors. The average price of one gigabyte from Sunrise is 8.04 francs. Because the way in which zones are defined varies between carriers, there are price differences on a country level. Spusu is cheaper than Sunrise for data roaming in 30 of the countries included in Sunrise’s Zone A. Swisscom has an average cost of 13.32 francs per gigabyte for most of the countries. However, Swisscom’s prices for some of the countries in Sunrise’s Zone A, such as Costa Rica, are higher, at 52.07 per gigabyte. Country-specific bundles are similar to Sunrise’s average, costing 6.88 francs or 8.05 francs in many cases.
Sunrise is also launching a new “Unlimited” data bundle with 60 gigabytes of roaming data that is valid for one month. The price tag is 79.90 francs. This bundle is interesting for travelers who need more than 10 gigabytes of data.
Conclusion by moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler
This is a solid price reduction from Sunrise. I interpret the price reductions as an attempt by Sunrise to respond to Swisscom’s country-specific roaming bundles. But notwithstanding Sunrise’s price reductions, Swisscom’s country-specific bundles still cost less, in many cases.
The disadvantage of Swisscom’s country-specific bundles is, quite simply, that they are only valid for roaming in a single country. The result is that people who travel to multiple countries must purchase multiple bundles, in which case using country-specific bundles becomes the more expensive solution. If you travel to more than one covered country within the space of a year, the zone-based bundles from Sunrise have an advantage over single-country bundles from Swisscom.
