Swisscom Introduces More Data Roaming Bundles

May 27, 2025 - Ralf Beyeler

Mobile service provider Swisscom is making changes to its data roaming bundles for mobile Internet access while traveling. Ralf Beyeler from moneyland.ch analyzed the new bundles and compared them with competing offers. The new Swisscom bundles are a challenge to competitors. In over 120 countries, customers can get online at a cost of less than 10 francs per gigabyte.

Swisscom is expanding its data roaming bundles just ahead of the summer holiday season. The changes include both cheaper data roaming in Europe, and the launch of new bundles for more than 60 other countries.

Mobile data for Europe is getting cheaper

Swisscom is making customer-friendly adjustments to data roaming bundles for its zone that covers EU countries, the UK, Norway, and Iceland. The one-gigabyte bundle will now cost 9.90 francs instead of 14.90 francs. The five-gigabyte bundle will now cost 29.90 francs instead of 39.90 francs. The price of the biggest roaming bundle will remain the same, but the included data is being doubled from 10 gigabytes to 20 gigabytes.

New country-specific bundles

Swisscom is also expanding its country-specific bundles, with bundles for more than 80 countries now being offered. The text below gives you an overview of different country-specific bundles from Swisscom. All of these bundles have a 12-month validity period, after which the bundle expires.

Country-specific bundles for an EU country cost 5.90 francs for a one-gigabyte bundle, 19.90 francs for a five-gigabyte bundle, and 39.90 francs for a 20-gigabyte bundle. That translates into 5.90, 3.99, or 2 francs per gigabyte respectively.

Swisscom initially launched just seven country-specific bundles in the summer of 2024. These bundles let you use mobile data while roaming in just one specific country, and cost less than a bundle for an entire zone. Country-specific bundles are only available to customers who use a Swisscom mobile plan, but not to prepaid mobile users.

Higher roaming allowances in two mobile plans

Swisscom is increasing the roaming allowances included in its Blue Mobile S and Blue Mobile L mobile plans. From June 1, 2025, the Blue Mobile S plan will include one gigabyte of roaming data for Austria, France, Germany, and Italy. It will also include 100 megabytes of roaming data for other countries.

The Blue Mobile L plan will continue to include 40 gigabytes of roaming data for the Europe zone, as it has until now, but it will now also include 10 gigabytes of roaming data for Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, and the US. Additionally, it will also include 2.5 gigabytes of roaming data for other countries.

Important: As before, the Blue Mobile S, Basic Mobile XS, and Basic Mobile S mobile plans will not include any data roaming allowances. The Basic Mobile M plan will continue to include five gigabytes of data that can be used both in Switzerland and in many European countries.

Country-specific bundles offer high savings potential

In many cases, the cost of Swisscom roaming bundles for EU countries will be much lower than it was in the past, as moneyland.ch calculations for roaming data amounts of between one and 20 gigabytes. Compared to the previous rates used for this zone, the revised rates are up to 50 percent cheaper. But depending on the amount of data included in a bundle, the price change can also be very small. For example, the cost of using 8300 megabytes (8.3 gigabytes) of data will be just 10 centimes cheaper after the revision.

The new country-specific bundles offer much bigger potential savings than bundles for the Europe zone. Depending on the size of bundles, customers will pay between 33 and 67 percent less than before.

The moneyland.ch analysis also reveals that data roaming bundles for the Europe zone are much more expensive than the country-specific bundles. moneyland.ch calculated the costs for between one and 20 gigabytes of data per year. Using Europe zone bundles costs between 50 and 68 percent more than using bundles that are limited to specific countries. However, it is important to note that you have to get a different country-specific bundle for each country you travel to.

How does Swiscom compare to other carriers?

Swisscom is one of the more affordable carriers for data roaming. Spusu is normally cheaper than Swisscom for roaming data amounts between one and 10 gigabytes. For certain amounts of data, Sunrise and Digital Republic are more affordable than the zone-based bundles from Swisscom. When country-specific bundles are accounted for, Swisscom is typically the second-cheapest carrier for data roaming, after Spusu.

Conclusion by moneyland.ch telecom expert Ralf Beyeler

The new country-specific bundles will put pressure on other carriers. These bundles enable roaming at a cost of less than 10 francs per gigabyte in over 120 travel destinations. There is not one of those 120 destinations for which you will pay more than 30 francs for 5 gigabytes of data, 60 francs for 10 gigabytes of data, or more than 50 francs for 20 gigabytes of data.

The new prices are so favorable that some Swisscom customers may opt to use Swisscom roaming bundles instead of travel eSIMs. The country-specific roaming bundles have an advantage in that they remain valid for one year, while many travel eSIM offers expire after just a few days. But it is important to note that travel eSIM offers can be cheaper than Swisscom roaming bundles.

The disadvantage of the country-specific bundles is that you have to get a different bundle for each country you travel to. That increases the likelihood of the bundles expiring before you can use up the included data. If you travel to different European countries, getting a bundle for the whole zone can work out cheaper
